1. Outline the integrative functions of religion.

3. List the three sources of power and three types of authority

1. Force: This is the actual or threatened use of coercion to impose one’s will on others. For example a leader can apply force to imprison or execute a political dissident. Terrorists also apply force when they seize or bomb an embassy.

2. Influence: this refer to the use of power through a process of persuasion. This is the power that comes from wealth, social status or position

3. Authority: This is the power or right to enforce rules and give orders. Authority is the power that has been institutionalized and is recognized by the people over whom it is exercised.

Types of Authority:

There are three basic types of authority.

1. Traditional Authority: this type of authority is conferred by custom and accepted practice. For Example a king or queen is accepted as the ruler of a nation simply by virtue of inheriting the crown.

2. Legal Rational Authority: This is the authority given to the president or prime minister to make and enforce laws and policies.

3. Charismatic Authority: This refers to the power by a leader’s exceptional personal or emotional appeal to his or her followers. It is the possession of great charm or influence. Charisma is a divine gift which is divinely bestowed.

6. Discuss briefly the difference in the following terms.

a. Monotheism is a belief that is based on a single deity while Polytheism is a belief that is
based on more than one deity
b. Sacred refers to the things that inspire awe, respect and even fear. People become part of the sacred realm only by completing some ritual such as prayer or sacrifice. Profane on the hand is used to describe the ordinary or commonplace not connected with or used for religious matters.
c. Monopoly is the situation where there is only a single business firm in the market. Monopoly allows an industry to dominate and take effective control of commodity by dictating the prices, standards of quality and availability. Oligopoly is that situation in which there are few suppliers to a product and one supplier’s action can have significant impact on the prices and on its competitors.
d. Capitalism: This is an economic system in which the means of production are largely in private hands and mainly for accumulation of profit. That is, the economy is controlled by private individuals. Socialism is an economic system in which means of production and distribution in a society is collectively owned rather than privately. The basic objective of this economic system is to meet the people’s needs rather than to maximize profits.
e. Occupation is whatever we do for pay. It could be a job, work, gig, stint, position, duty or vacation.

Occupation influences our social behavior in a number of ways. As part of the socialization process, people prepare for work. Our occupation also determines our position (status) in the society.

Profession refers to an occupation which requires extensive knowledge that is governed by code of ethics. Professionals have great deal of autonomy. They are responsible for their actions under least supervision.

e. Morbidity Rate: this is the number of reports of incidence per 100,000 people. Mortality rate: this refers to the incidence of death in a given population.
